The perfect mix of beach and urban entertainment…I have a soft spot for large cities that are located near the beach. This is certainly true for Palma, capital of the Spanish Balearic islands archipelago southwest of Mallorca. It is the reason why so many Spaniards go here for a city trip….which is saying something, considering all the great cities on the Spanish mainland.  And I can certainly confirm this: Palma is a fantastic city. You can shop till you drop, the cathedral is breathtakingly beautiful, there is a wealth of culinary delights, it is lovely to be strolling through the various neighbourhoods and no shortage of terraces on which to settle down. And then there is the sea……..

In the middle of the city centre, right across from the town hall and on one of Palma’s loveliest squares, is a wonderful Local Hideaway: Hotel Cort. It is a Hideaway in the truest sense of the word, for you leave behind the hectic city as soon as you enter the lift and the peace and quiet are overwhelming. This stately mansion only has 14 suites and two Double Rooms. The roof terrace features a small ‘plunge pool’ for a refreshing dip on warmer days and sunbeds for guests. The beautiful tiles, with obvious characteristics of their Moorish past, are particularly charming and can be found throughout the hotel.  And the fabrics are based on old Mallorcan designs as well. They were revived and used as upholstery and wall covering, a clear signature of the Hotel Cort.

My suite overlooks Placa Cort and is very spacious. It features a living-room with comfortable sofa bed, chairs, a desk and original trinkets and books that create a cosy atmosphere. The sleeping area features a large bed with luxurious bed linen and the bathroom is a true ballroom with double-shower and lovely Molton Brown amenities……Pure luxury! Every suite is different and this makes for a colourful ensemble. The Island Suite is the true masterpiece, a duplex suite of 70 m2 on the top floor with a stunning view and a private terrace with Jacuzzi.

At Hotel Cort , guests are pampered to a maximum and the service is very high-quality. For me, the fact that this hotel features a contemporary restaurant and bar was an absolute added bonus. In the morning, this I where you sit down for  lovely ‘à la carte’ breakfast with a ‘cortado’ (small coffee with a dash of milk), outside on the terrace when the weather is nice. And after breakfast you can have lunch, dinner or drinks here as well. The cuisine is creative, contemporary and follows the seasons. Having a restaurant and bar makes for a lively atmosphere (both tourists as well as locals visit here), but the hotel’s location factors in as well, for all the city’s highlights are within easy walking distance. And when you’re tired of all the impressions and Spanish city life, all you have to do is retreat to your elegant Hideaway….the best of both worlds comes together in Hotel Cort!
