Palma has the best of both worlds… a bustling city life and the sea! In addition to the perfect city hotel, I was therefore looking for a Local Hideaway by the sea. And I found Portixol Hotel. A bit further away from the centre, but consequently more spacious and more quietly located. A contemporary hotel in Scandinavian minimalist design, which is understandable considering its Scandinavian owners.
Portixol used to be an ancient fishing neighbourhood just outside of Palma, dilapidated and hardly worthwhile. This changed after the Scandinavian owners revived the old building that also housed a restaurant, Portixol hotel. These days, Portixol is a lively neighbourhood with a hip and happening beach life where it is lovely to stay. In other words, Portixol hotel set the trend here, with its white polished walls, lots of light and transparency interspersed with Mediterranean colours and details: a genuine boutique beach hotel.
I stayed in one of the 24 rooms and was fortunate enough to be given a room with a gorgeous balcony and stunning view of the sea (and first-class sunset). Although they are all different, each room is equally comfortable and equipped with everything you need. The bed was wonderful, for instance, and lovely Korres amenities were available in the perfect shower. Each room also features a Nespresso coffee machine, a stocked up minibar that is included in the price of the room, a docking station and a large television. Salient detail: binoculars are available in the room to gaze at the sunset (or the handsome men strolling on the boulevard ;-)). The fact that you can also borrow DVD’s at the reception is one of the little things that make your stay just that little bit more pleasant.
But not only the rooms are a luxury: Hotel Portixol also features a lovely Spa and a gym. And on sunny days you can lounge outside in one of the sunbeds at the outside swimming pool. The cuisine is wonderful, lots of lovely dishes to choose from in the restaurant and a breakfast buffet that offers an extensive array of delicacies.
It would almost make you forget to discover Palma……but you should definitely make an effort to see this great city. You can even rent one of the hotel’s bikes, all you have to do is follow the boulevard. Palma offers some wonderful shopping opportunities, the cathedral is stunning, you can eat to your heart’s content and wonder around all the different areas. And maybe you will return to your hotel just in time to watch the sun set on the terrace of Hotel Portixol……excellent!
