On the penultimate day of the year, my Brady Bunch family and I get in the car and head for Brittany to meet Liz and her family. For they are the proud owners of eight holiday cottages ‘à la campagne’ (in the field). Only a ten minute drive away from the beautiful coast – Cote d’Armor – in the diverse and somewhat rugged Brittany countryside. Wow, I am yet again completely in awe of a wonderful place… eight idyllic cottages spread around the vast fields and lands of a working farm.

Liz’s husband, Corentin, mainly focuses on the operational side of the farm – for they have cows, crops and horses – while Liz takes care of the cottages and the guests. And they have four children, which means there’s never a dull moment!
It will come as no surprise that children are very welcome here, with cots and other baby equipment readily available. The surroundings are perfect for children to play in and explore. Every spring and summer, most animals leave the stables to be taken to the large estate that belongs to Corentin’s family: Le Char a Bancs- a wonderful place not to be missed!

Perfect stay a la campagne!

But I’m getting ahead of myself, for first we want to explore the cottages. All of them are named after their original occupants – all members of the Corentin family. No cottage is the same and they were all done up in a special theme. Liz has a wonderful sense of decoration and style….original and unique! We are staying in “La Maison de Jeanne”, which is decorated entirely in the style of an old school house. Wonderful and in no way overdone, quite the contrary. The large open plan kitchen, fully equipped and complete with washing machine, will allow you to cook for yourself and make some lovely Nespresso coffee. A lazy couch, TV and wood burning stove, with a large supply of wood provided, complete the living room. You won’t have to be cold here anywhere, for six of the seven cottages come with an ingenious, ecological floor heating system, nice and very comfortable.

Lovely decoration!

My two children share a super cosy bedroom with two single beds and my husband and I have a spacious bedroom in the attic, with large bed and lovely bed linen. Naturally, there is also a bathroom, complete with spacious walk-in shower. What a cosy cottage this is. The kids alternate between playing outside and playing school inside. In the summer, life in Brittany takes place outside, and all seven cottages have their own terrace with garden furniture, BBQ and a private garden, in short: lots of privacy, space and comfort. All the basics are present, so you won’t have to rush off to the supermarket upon your arrival….although I had to contain myself, for there is nothing I like better than to wander around a mega large French supermarket, looking for nice and tasty items of food. But I do urge you to try Liz’s breakfast, which she delivers at your cottage in the morning at a small charge ….not only is it lovely and homemade, but she also serves it very attractively. The shed houses a washing machine and clothes dryer for shared use….very handy!

The weather during our stay was lovely, perfect for an extensive exploration of our surroundings: lovely strolls along the beach, and took home a large collection of shells. An extensive hiking trail along the cliffs or the magical Abbaye de Beauport are just some examples of the many beautiful things Brittany has to offer. This is such a lovely Hideaway for any season….life’s good ‘dans la prairie’!
