Only two hours by ferry from the Greek mainland is Andros…to be honest, I had never heard of this island before planning my trip to Greece. Which is hardly surprising because this island is primarily a holiday destination for the Greeks, especially for well to do Greeks with a country residence here. Therefore, even in the peak season it is relatively quiet and the only tourists here are Greek.
Eleven years ago, former politician Nelly and her architect husband Michaelis fell in love with the ruins of an old farmhouse…the place felt like home and they saw endless possibilities to turn the dilapidated remains into a comfortable estate….their own ‘happy place’, a country estate where they could receive guests as if they were friends. They revived the old stables and farmhouse, and started farming the land organically, also putting lots of energy into growing fruit trees, grapes, vegetables, etc. The result is a hidden oasis…nearby Chora, the island’s capital.

This Hideaway is a tiny paradise with only four lodgings! Perfectly located on the island, which is yours to discover by rental car (an absolute must!). For Andros is worth the discovery: an extensive network of walking trails, hidden beaches, fabulous villages….it has it all. Nelly knows the island like the back of her hand and proves to be the perfect hostess, pointing guests in all the right directions. Also, she knows all the best taverns and restaurants and is happy to reserve a table for you. At Taverna Nona, for instance – a personal favourite of mine – or at Skalakia, another great place to eat!

And after having been on the road, it is lovely coming home to this Hideaway and relaxing in the garden, amid the lemon trees and the overwhelming fragrance of jasmine. Read a book, dive into the swimming pool or practice some yoga in the designated sala. Or book a lovely and relaxing massage! The comfortable lodgings feature excellent quality beds and bedlinen and lovely shower amenities. Fresh water and coffee/tea are supplied daily and a delicious extensive breakfast of fresh fruit and farm-grown products is served in the mornings.
