A brand new B&B from my dear friends Mariana and Pedro right in the city center of Porto. I couldn’t wait to visit my dear friends Mariana and Pedro in Porto again… especially since their new B&B recently saw the light of day. Our friendship began years ago when they ran another B&B in my favourite Portuguese city. The contact stayed and so I travelled in mid-October to admire and test their latest project… And to catch up!
The location of their Hideaway is even better this time: in the middle of the old centre, right where the action is. This also means that you get to know the bitter side of Porto, as the difference between rich and poor is clearly visible in this traditionally working class city.
The building has been impressively restored, a fantastic collaboration with Luís Sobral from Depa Architects. Brutalism meets modern design, beautiful clean lines and bold colours. Downstairs is a spacious common area where the delicious breakfast is served (included in the price). There is also an outdoor space… rare in the middle of the city centre.
The 8 rooms are spread over 2 floors and vary from standard to superior plus. The latter category is the most spacious and has a balcony with a beautiful view of the old city. The rooms are not too spacious but are so functionally furnished and finished with the highest quality materials… all in style and sleekly designed. A fine rain shower in the bathroom and they have also thought about reducing plastic by using large bottles of shower products, biodegradable shower caps and filtered water in a carafe. Top!
Mariana is a great host!
Apart from the special design – this is what really sets this B&B apart – the hospitality of Mariana, who has taken charge of the daily operations, is unsurpassed. She does everything to make her guests feel at home and to send them to the best addresses with her ‘insider tips’. They are around the corner and all within walking distance!
And then this B&B is also very affordable! So that means planning a city trip to Porto in no time! I have saudade – homesickness – to my dear friends and can’t wait to see them again soon!
