Just outside San Ignacio I found a fantastic Local Hideaway, surrounded by lush greenery but also not very far from the centre (taxi). You stay in well appointed cabins and the beautiful infinity pool is a lovely place to unwind from travelling. Breakfast is a treat and in the evening you eat good (predominantly) Italian food in the restaurant. The wine list is unique to Belize and there is also a cosy bar where you can grab a drink. This Local Hideaway is a perfect base to visit various highlights in Belize, highly recommended!
On the ‘wishlist’ for so long was Belize… this small Central American country sandwiched between Mexico (Yucatan) and Guatemala is a ‘hidden gem’! I was still a bit apprehensive that there would be too many American tourists and especially pensionados staying there but nothing could be further from the truth, especially if you plan it a bit well in terms of travel time and where you stay… of course I can advise on that!
Belize is a treasure trove of hidden Mayan temples, overwhelming jungle and an enchanting underwater world. It houses the second largest reef in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The people are super friendly and speak very good English as well as Spanish (it was an old British colony). Travelling there is easy and it is safe… are you convinced yet?
I have already tipped and added to the collection a fantastic jungle lodge and an island paradise, but this Hideaway is also absolutely worth a visit and is located just outside the town of San Ignacio.
San Ignacio is a place that should definitely be on your ‘to visit’ list when travelling around Belize: besides a cosy centre with good restaurants, it has a fantastic market where locals from far and wide come to sell and buy their fresh produce. It is especially busy on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but it is also a colourful place on other days. The area around San Ignacio is great with impressive Mayan temples (which, unlike those in Yucatan, are not nearly as crowded and if you were as lucky as I was you could almost have the ancient Mayan site all to yourself), the unmissable ATM caves and overwhelming nature.
