This Hideaway is such a find, as is Kythira….it reflects the essence of Local Hideaways and it is wonderful to find that even in the peak season there are places in Greece that are still relatively unspoiled and authentic. Don’t spread the word!
Tucked away on the Peloponnesian mainland is an Ionic island that is a favourite holiday destination for the Greek and represents a step back in time…here, you won’t find any of the glitzy beach pavilions and places that went up out of nowhere and look so great on Instagram, but stunning coves; abandoned monasteries; endless hiking trails, places where you will be stared at for ordering a freddo cappuccino because the Greek drink frappés instead, great taverns, where the younger relatives return to work during their summer holidays in order hard to feed the many hungry mouths in their families….this is Greece as it was 25 years ago and it is a great island to spend a holiday (and combines nicely a visit to the Peleponnese, the peninsula southeast of Athens)!
Albert and Anita, from the Netherlands, fell in love with this authentic island eleven years ago – when they were looking for a sunny place to build their new home. Located centrally on the island, they built a beautiful house in the traditional Greek style, including two apartments that can accommodate up to four guests on the ground floor and 2 studios for two on the first floor. All have their own kitchen/kitchenette and a fantastic terrace with a first-class view of the sunset. They called their guesthouse “Light and Space”, which is exactly what it is….lots of light and space!
For me, it is the perfect place to spend part of my summer holiday…for it is during the high season that I struggle most to find places that are not completely swamped with tourists and where one can still enjoy a holiday among the Greek.
Authentic island life!
Albert and Anita’s suite for four in Kythira turns out to be just perfect for my family. The apartment is fully equipped with everything you may need: a kitchen for preparing breakfast or a quick lunch…but also dinner for the kids when my husband and I have planned a date night;-). There is a wonderful bedroom for the adults and a separate sleeping area for the kids in an elevated part of the living room. Lovely organic toiletries are provided in the perfect rain shower……. Albert and Anita have a great eye for detail and make sure their guests enjoy a perfect holiday.
Light and Space!
They tidy the rooms and make up the beds daily and they can also prepare breakfast (at a charge). A large supermarket is close by, as is a small tavern where they serve coffee, cake or a sandwich as well as various drinks and bites. But the masterpiece of our apartment is the large terrace…where we’ve spent a lot of time eating, drinking, lying in the hammock, doing yoga exercises, playing games and enjoying the magical sunset.
Every day, we went out with our rental car (an absolute must around here) to discover the island….the most beautiful beaches (depending on where the wind came from) with crystal clear water, the hip capital of Choro with its lovely shops and coffee bars, old monasteries, picturesque little villages, lovely herbal beauty products at Herovolo in Potamos and the best taverns on the island (and there are loads of those, let me tell you, for instance Familia and Filio, two of our favourites). Kythira is also perfect for taking long walks – we got up early to stay ahead of the heat – and spring and fall are especially great for discovering the many hiking trails and stunning nature.
